This talk delves into the fascinating world of Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary detective and the real-life influences that shaped his creation. Doyle, a trained physician who served in the Boer War and had a keen interest in spiritualism, drew from his experiences and the tumultuous events of his time to craft the adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
About the Speaker
Dr Stephen Goss is a former lecturer in history at Queen’s University Belfast. His work focuses on Nineteenth and Twentieth Century British, Irish, and European history, with a specialism in the Cold War. A published academic and experienced educator, he has been a popular public speaker for over fifteen years. Stephen lectures in history and politics at City Lit in London and is an Expert Tour Guide at the Imperial War Museums.
