Tuesday Talk All About Bookbinding
Details
An introduction to the history of books, from the beginnings on papyrus, through mediaeval bindings to mass produced paperbacks, I show examples of all the major styles. Discussion and handling of samples is important to the talk, and everyone has the chance to handle wood, leather, paper and linen thread. I also show a range of contemporary art bindings using glass, knitted cloth, ceramics, carved wood, and silk as cover materials.
About the Speaker
Paul is a multidisciplinary artist whose journey spans ceramics, glass engraving, and bookbinding, shaped by early encouragement in arts and crafts and formal training at London's Central School of Art and Design. After studying glass engraving at Sweden's Orrefors Glass Company and working as a potter and tile decorator, he developed an extensive portfolio of drawings and photographs that evolved into greeting cards, prints, and handcrafted books now exhibited nationally. His diverse expertise across materials and techniques informs engaging talks on various aspects of arts and crafts practice.
