This talk is based on Pushpinder’s book “Women of Substance” – a profile of Asian women in the UK 1997. Pushpinder will be reflecting on the struggles and challenges with in the social political back drop in the UK. A significant number of Asian women have now become visible in politics Business Arts and Media ‘in the City’ as well as excelling in Science and Academia. The Asian woman I am going to talk about are from diverse social cultural and religious backgrounds celebrating their powerful message of positive role models for the young as well as their peer groups.
These women have been driven by the need to prove themselves manage to push the boundaries, shattering many a stereotype by penetrating though the “glass ceiling” which was more like a concrete roof . Pushpinder’s talk will be focusing on sharing stories of some wonderful asian women who have shown courage and sheer determination to achieve while changing the way they are perceived.
About the Speaker:
Dr Pushpinder Chowdhry MBE is a trained Psychotherapist. She was brought up in Glasgow and her early work includes time spent with young offenders and asian youths as a community worker. Working closely with Harrow Council she was a instrumental in establishing “Yakeen” now know as DAWN – a free counselling service for Asian women in Harrow. She hosted advice and phone -in counselling programme on radio and television.
Now she is a CEO and Festival Director of UKAsian Film Festival
