Hands On History

Meet three figures from Harrow's past (Anglo-Saxon, Tudor and Victorian) and step into their world at Headstone Manor. Students will explore the Tudor herb gardens, handle genuine Kodak cameras from Harrow's industrial heritage, and get hands-on with tactile wallpaper samples to compare the 'then and now'. The session ends with a creative activity. You have the choice of creating a clay fire insurance badge, making a Victorian peg doll, or designing a stained-glass bookmark inspired by the Whitefriars glassmakers.

Aim of the session to explore the local history of Harrow through figures from the past, object handling and sensory exploration of the Manor House, culminating in a creative art activity.

Most suitable for KS3 SEN groups

Industrial Harrow

Step into a former Manor House bedroom that now tells the story of Harrow's factory past. Students will discover the brands that were made on their doorstep: Kodak, Winsor & Newton, Hamilton Brush Works and Whitefriars. Along the way, students will consider who worked in these factories, why the factories have now all closed, and how the building has changed over time. The self-guided visit ends with a reflective activity linking the objects to students' own families and the world of work today.
 

Aim of the session: Self-guided activity to explore Harrow's industrial heritage through local factories and their objects, helping students understand how industry shaped the lives of local people and the town itself, and how that legacy is remembered today.
